In the current financial crisis are you concerned about providing for future needs such as retirement, college education, and more? Have you found that savings accounts, CDs, etc. provide stability but not the required long term growth provided by stocks? This may seem like a strange start to a long term investment program to address your goals. However, keep in mind the history of recoveries which makes this a good time to start. More importantly, there is an alternate and underutilized approach to investing called Dividend Reinvesting Plans – DRIP. It allows starting small, and with regular additions, will carry you through the downturns. As an example, $7,450 invested on a monthly over the last 12+ years in Exxon Mobile became $15,000 despite a drop of $1,700 in 2008. That includes the downturn of 2001-2003 and through the end of 2008.
